MATERIALS AND METHODS Gila modocensis (2n= 36) and G. malior (2n= 36) are small
autogamous spring annuals of the Mojave Desert and Great Basin (Figure 1). Gilia mlior
also occurs in the arid inner South Coast Range. Gilia modocensis grows on sandy desert
mesas and G. miior in fine-textured soils on desert hillslopes and adjacent plains. For further
